Vitalik Buterin Interview in Chinese: The Present and Future of Ethereum
On April 7, 2025, the Pop-X HK Research House event, co-hosted by DappLearning, ETHDimsum, Panta Rhei, and UETH, was held in Hong Kong. During the event, Yan, the initiator of the DappLearning community, conducted a Chinese interview with Vitalik Buterin, covering several hot topics such as ETH POS, Layer 2, cryptography, and AI. Below is a summary of the interview content:
01 Views on POS Upgrade
Vitalik believes that the price trend of ETH is unrelated to the POS upgrade, and is more dependent on the development of applications within the Ethereum ecosystem. He pointed out that one challenge facing Ethereum is how to ensure the success of ecosystem applications can translate into the value of ETH. In the future, more applications that support long-term value for ETH holders are needed.
02 PBS Architecture and Centralization Concerns
Vitalik acknowledged that the Builder under the PBS architecture may show a trend towards centralization, but he believes this will not affect overall security. He explained that the verification process is still completed by decentralized Attester nodes, and large nodes cannot interfere with the consensus process. At the same time, mechanisms like Fossil can further decentralize the choice of transactions.
03 The Relationship between Layer 1 and Layer 2
Vitalik pointed out that there are issues with current L2 such as slow progress in security and insufficient interoperability. He believes that L1 still needs to play a role in some key mechanisms and high-value applications like DeFi (. Ethereum is advancing multiple L1 scaling solutions, expecting to increase L1 Gas limits by 10 times by 2026.
04 The Development of Cryptography and AI
Vitalik believes that ZK technology should develop in a layered manner, allowing most developers to only master high-level languages. Regarding MPC and FHE, he expressed concerns that their reliance on committees could pose security risks. On AI, Vitalik thinks it could both reinforce centralization and produce democratizing effects, helping to bridge the gap between experts and novices.
05 Expectations for the Ethereum Ecosystem
Vitalik encourages developers to focus on application innovations that were previously unattainable but are now feasible. He hopes to see applications that not only have real value and are liked by users but also have sustainable business models, rather than just idealistic projects with only a few users or purely speculative applications.
