On August 13, the US financial market welcomed favourable information for the longer. The three major stock indices of the New York Stock Exchange all rose, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average increasing by 1.04%, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite indices climbing by 0.32% and 0.14% respectively, both of which set new closing historical highs.
Chinese concept stocks performed particularly well, with the Wind China Concept Technology Leader Index rising more than 4%, and the NASDAQ China Golden Dragon Index also increasing by over 2%. In terms of individual stocks, the new energy vehicle company NIO led the way with an increase of over 17%; the autonomous driving technology company Pony.ai followed closely, rising by over 7%; internet giants Alibaba, search engine Baidu, and electric vehicle manufacturer Li Auto all rose by nearly 4%.
The cryptocurrency market is equally bustling. Bitcoin has broken through the $123,000 mark, setting a new historical high, with a 24-hour rise of over 2%.
The optimistic sentiment in the US financial markets is partly driven by expectations regarding Federal Reserve policies. According to interest rate swap data, the market generally believes that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at the September meeting, with a probability as high as 100%. Meanwhile, overnight index swap contracts have also fully priced in the expectation of a 25 basis point rate cut by the Federal Open Market Committee in September.
However, the latest statement from U.S. Treasury Secretary Besant has brought some uncertainty to the market. In an interview on the 13th, he stated that if the meeting between the U.S. and Russian leaders does not yield satisfactory results, the U.S. may intensify sanctions against Russia or impose secondary tariffs. In response, the Russian side had previously stated that the Russian economy has developed "immunity" to sanctions over the years.
It is worth noting that the U.S. government debt has surpassed the $37 trillion mark. Whether interest rate cuts can effectively stimulate the economy at such a high debt level remains a question worth discussing. Market participants are closely monitoring future economic trends and policy directions in hopes of seizing investment opportunities in a complex and ever-changing financial environment.
