The idea that a pizza’s value grows nonlinearly may seem crazy and unrealistic (of course for the pizza it is but it is an analogy after all), but it mirrors how human networks function.



Cities are a prime example. Patents, GDP, number of jobs, social interactions, and other benefits scale nonlinearly with a city’s population.

While resources must be shared among more people, cities become more efficient, making cooperation worthwhile.

This efficiency drives cities to grow larger over time.

People aren’t drawn to cities by scarce real estate or jobs—these are limitations, not benefits.

Instead, the nonlinear advantages of collaborating with many others outweigh these constraints.
